Case Studies: Computer Forensics
When a contracting company had reason to suspect its computer estimation
program had fallen into the hands of a competitor, they filed suit. As a
result of that lawsuit and the evidence presented, the court ordered an investigation
of the competitor's computers by Rachlin Computer Forensics.
The program in question was developed for the company's sales force and included margins,
cost lists, employee lists, salaries and other proprietary information. Questions arose
when a manager for the company, who was largely responsible for testing the program,
was hired by the competitor. The competitor denied ever viewing or receiving the software
in question.
During the investigation, our team acquired and examined several PCs and servers and found
a deleted copy of the software on a computer belonging to the president of the competitor
company - a veritable "smoking gun." In addition, our team discovered that the competitor
company had downloaded hacking tools to break the software's password and had extracted the
proprietary information into a more readable format.
