Spotlight on Brieanna Yowell
Brieanna Yowell lives in Coral Springs. Like most 13-year-olds, she loves going to school, hanging out with friends and cheerleading. But cystic fibrosis, a disease for which there is no cure, keeps her at home and in the hospital. An inherited birth defect, CF carries with it a life expectancy of just over 33 years. Doctors have recommended a double lung transplant to increase Brieanna's life expectancy while making breathing easier.
The total cost of the transplant, including post-operative care, can exceed $500,000. And, while insurance covers part of the cost, it does not cover the entire amount. Friends of Brieanna, along with the Children's Organ Transplant Association, are trying desperately to raise the necessary funds for Brieanna to undergo the operation. They still have a long way to go.
In April, Team Rachlin rallied around Brieanna, raising $7,800 in a single jeans day event including the firm's 100% match. And, the Rachlin Foundation partnered with the South Florida Business Journal to run a full page ad in the publication, advertising two fundraising events. After all, Brieanna could be anyone's child. To learn more about Brieanna's story and how you can help, please visit www.cotaforbrieannay.com
New IRS Rules for Charities
The IRS is stepping up its efforts to make not-for-profit organizations reveal more about their operations. For the first time in 20 years, the annual tax form for charities (Form 990) is getting a makeover. Charities will start filing the new form next year. The new form is good news for Americans seeking information about governance, executive compensation and spending practices. Learn more about the new rules in the Fall 2008 issue of Rachlin News.
