A Whole Lotta Love
On a day when abandoned and neglected children are often forgotten, the Rachlin Foundation set out to make a difference. Launching a new Valentine's Day initiative, foundation representatives delivered love and hope, in the form of gift-filled backpacks, to 58 children living in shelters throughout the tri-county region.

Each of the children received a backpack filled with a book, small teddy bear and a bookmark. Children ages 6 to 10 received a copy of "I'm Gonna Like Me," by Jamie Lee Curtis and Laura Cornell, a book about feeling good about yourself. Children 11 and older received a copy of "Chicken Soup for the Teenage Soul," from the hugely popular "Chicken Soup for the Soul" series.

Following the delivery, Rachlin received a heartfelt note from T. Robert Giese, president of the Children's Home Society of Florida Foundation saying, "To my knowledge, this is the first time a corporation has been so insightful at such a special time of the year."

"The note said it all," says foundation Executive Director Suzanne Leslie. "To know that we made a difference was the greatest thanks of all."

MCHF Piggy Bank Endowment Fund
In 2006, Miami Children's Hospital (MCH) provided more than $19.4 million in uncompensated care to meet the needs of South Florida's children. Most of these funds provide essential inpatient services for uninsured children with serious or critical care needs as part of the hospital's important ongoing role as a regional safety net hospital.

To help supplement the short fall for patients whose insurance either runs out or for those who have no coverage at all, the Miami Children's Hospital Foundation created the MCHF Piggy Bank Endowment Fund. By contributing to the fund, donors can help ensure that children continue to receive the best possible pediatric care available at MCH.
