José I. Marrero is a partner in Rachlin's Advisory Services division. He brings more than 28 years of experience to the firm from the Internal Revenue Service, where he served in many roles, including revenue agent, special agent, group manager, regional analyst, division chief/special agent in charge and deputy director in the Criminal Investigation Division. Mr. Marrero directed the national policies and programs of Criminal Investigation employees in the Office of Strategy. As the special agent in charge of the Miami field office, he was responsible for all criminal investigation resources in the southern district of Florida, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands.
Mr. Marrero has conducted investigations and facilitated reports and approvals for prosecution in complex criminal and civil investigations. He has also prepared and supervised investigations regarding money laundering, tax evasion, gambling, financial trusts and other white-collar financial investigations. In addition, he has developed cases for trial and testified in various forums, including criminal tax and money laundering investigations, Equal Employment Opportunity (EEO) investigations and Merit Systems Protection Board hearings.
Since joining Rachlin, he has provided advisory or forensic services relating to corporate embezzlement, civil and criminal tax, due diligence, damage calculations, SEC-related investigations, partnership disputes, divorce proceedings and Suspicious Activity Reports (SAR reviews). Mr. Marrero has also assisted a courtappointed receiver in SEC- and forfeiture-related court orders as well as a variety of other, similar engagements.
